Schools and Fundraising

Fundraising guidelines coming from Ministry

In People for Education's 2009 Annual Report on Schools,
we said:
"Fundraising is a reality in schools across the country, and fundraising activities can be an effective method for engaging parents and school communities, but high levels of fundraising lead to inequities among schools."
we recommended:
"the Ministry of Education develop provincial fundraising policy that has equity as its foundation, and that includes guidelines for corporate involvement in schools; guarantees for essentials in every school and clarity about private funding for capital projects and naming rights."

Now - hurray! the Ministry is going to develop those guidelines. They are asking for input from Parent Involvement Committees, Parent groups and others.

Purpose of Education: Chapter Two

"if schools are about creating citizens for the next century, and we don’t know what that century will look like 5 years down the road, let alone what it will look like when this year’s kindergartners graduate around 2023 (of course they may not need to graduate if they are continuous learners ☺) – then we need to move beyond educating a small group of people in a certain way with a certain content, and focus on creating a learning environment (both concrete and virtual) where differences are ce… Continue

About us: What we do, why we do it!

Sometimes people wonder who and what People for Education is. They wonder if we have a hidden agenda, or if we are secretly in league with other organizations. Sometimes the questions about the organization just come up as a matter of course, other times they come up because people don’t agree with either our actions or our positions on issues.

It’s the beginning of a new school year, so it’s probably a good time for a quick update on what we do, why we do it, how we’re funded, and what our overall goal is.
