I am really looking forward to meeting other people engaged in education dialogues around the province. Not to mention a day without husband and kiddies in tow!! That doesn't happen very often (hee hee).

In answer to Ross' question, the conference takes place in Stong College. The main room for registration, plenary sessions, etc. is the main floor dining area. We put up lots of signs to get you there, and will be sending out specific directions to registrants closer to the actual conference date, so make sure you have officially registered with Jan, jan@peopleforeducation.com.

We will figure out a way to connect up with online community members, and let you know, both here and at the conference itself. I look forward to meeting both of you. I'm with you, Jackie - it's always nice to have a kid-free day to talk about, well, I guess to talk about our kids, but hey, at least they won't overhear us. :-)

I am attending this conference for the 4th year I think. The best things is that I have met some amazing people in this province that are so committed to education and having a good time learning together! The added benefit for me, coming from Ottawa, is a few days without teenagers...husband gets them all to himself.

Hi there, the conference is in the Stong Dining Room at Stong College, which is on Arboretum Lane. If you're coming from the 401, you drive north on Keele, past Finch. At Pond Road, you turn left into York. YOu stay on Pond Road which after a while curves to the right, keep going until Shoreham, then turn right, and then right again. That ends up being Arboretum. Now here's a link to a map.I hope you can come and that you can find your way there - it's usually a great day.

I've been to this conference for many years, and I am geographically challenged. So for those that are concerned about finding it....not to worry!! You will find it once you get to the University--- there is always somebody around that will kindly help out with directions!!!!! (and I have spoken to most of them)

I am so looking forward to seeing you all!

Ross, we do have a hidden agenda in terms of not publicizing the directions to the conference until you register... it helps us keep track of how many people are coming. :) And we really need to do that to make sure we have enough lunches! I remember one year when there weren't enough and we had to do the "family hold back" thing. You don't want to see how grouchy we get when we're hungry... So don't forget to make sure you've officially registered with Jan. She'll send you email directions and as Cathy says, you'll see our green ribbons and signs to guide you into York on the day of the conference.

What a day! I slept in this morning and woke up refreshed and reinvigorated.

It was just fabulous meeting you all, and so lovely to see there were even more of you than had "signed-up" here. I want to thank each and every one of you all for coming to the meet-up! I enjoyed chatting with you in person immensely. See you in the discussions :)

This time the book is a podcast. When you’re tired or busy with another task, well the podcast can be just the thing. Recently I heard Learning, Doing, Being: A New Science of Education. If you were intrigued by Alanna Mitchell’s recent Atkinson Series: Brainstorm about the developments of brain science and the impact on education, then this podcast may interest you.

From Speaking of Faith produced by American Public Media, host Krista Tippett talks with writers, artists, scientists, thinkers and theologians about ” belief, meaning, ethics and ideas” . Last week she interviewed neuroscientist (and dancer) Adele Diamond who now teaches at UBC .
She talks about Executive Functions. It turns out that play and especially dramatic play is key to the development of self –regulation.
“Her work is scientifically illustrating the educational power of things like play, sports, music, memorization and reflection” The more parts of an individual that get involved, the more the brain changes. The research is “turning modernity on its head”
Here is a short slide show clip....

Good point, marbat. I have often viewed it like that: School councils are advisory, and I would think that would also apply to where fundraised money is directed as well, ie, a recommendation can be made to support a specifed area with some fundin...
