This time the book is a podcast. When you’re tired or busy with another task, well the podcast can be just the thing. Recently I heard Learning, Doing, Being: A New Science of Education. If you were intrigued by Alanna Mitchell’s recent Atkinson Series: Brainstorm about the developments of brain science and the impact on education, then this podcast may interest you.

From Speaking of Faith produced by American Public Media, host Krista Tippett talks with writers, artists, scientists, thinkers and theologians about ” belief, meaning, ethics and ideas” . Last week she interviewed neuroscientist (and dancer) Adele Diamond who now teaches at UBC .
She talks about Executive Functions. It turns out that play and especially dramatic play is key to the development of self –regulation.
“Her work is scientifically illustrating the educational power of things like play, sports, music, memorization and reflection” The more parts of an individual that get involved, the more the brain changes. The research is “turning modernity on its head”
Here is short slide show clip....

Hi Gay, My bias is that our education system should be about producing critical thinkers. I hold this view largely because I think it promotes the greatest possibility for self-determination. I also agree with you that we need to learn to be cons...

Wow - I just read through all your posts and you guys are really thinking! I'm not sure if everyone (all people) would ever be able to agree on the purpose of education. But wouldn't it be great if we could agree on a set of general principles? I ...

I agree with your point Ross about the EQAO seeming to be more of a product of the political structure of the education system, rather than the design of the desired approach. While some kind of standardized testing likely has a place in the syste...

Hi Gord, Since you are part of a PIC that seems to be working well with their Board and Parent Councils, maybe you can clear my head. 1. What is the mandate of a PIC and where can I find this on the web? 2. Who elects members of the PIC? 3. Are P...

Thanks, Sheila for the suggested video of Sir Ken. I enjoyed it. It seems that all three of us are preaching to the converted. I think that this is an issue that should be discussed but in a larger forum such as a Townhall Meeting or a televised ...
