Your link worked - yay Deb! It looks really good - I will read it this weekend :) The next newsletter writing deadline is March 1st, which seems to work well with your research deadlines. All the best with your next steps in January!

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?
I am currently at Ryerson University doing my Masters of Arts in Early Childhood Studies. I am doing independent research looking at what newcomer parents have to tell us about parent engagement, and more specifically what suggestions they have for newcomer parents and staff in school and childcare communities to better engage each other.

Families Are Important Resources Manual and Video

Some of you know that I was coordinator for the FAIR project which was interested in finding out how to best engage at parents with young children in civic and community engagement. The project wrapped up December 2008 and there is a good resource for working with families available online. There is a manual that talks about the things learned during the FAIR project and there are appendices that have TONS of tools in them.

The project was also fortunate enough to have funds to create a short video about the project.

I would love it if people would check it out and let me know what they think about it.

You can find these resources at www.familyservicetoronto.org/programs/GUHD/FAIR.html

Hi Deborah,
It is great to have you as a member of our online community! You have done such incredible work as the coordinator of the Families Are Important Resources (FAIR) initiative I know your voice will be a valuable addition to all of our discussions here. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the project, I will let Deborah fill you in, but it was a great social inclusion initiative for parents and caregivers, getting them involved in community action. Although the project has come to an official end, the benefits to the participants, and to those of us who shared their learning journey, will continue for years to come!
Jacqui
p.s. It was a great celebration for FAIR on Friday, and I am looking forward to working with some of the parents that were involved - they are so wonderful and enthusiastic.

Schools are closing...

More school boards across the province are exploring the option of closing schools in the face of enrolment declines and budget pressures.

172 schools are slated or recommended to close in Ontario between 2009 and 2012, and a further 163 reviews are in progress.
