Draft "Parent Engagement Policy" not going out to PIC's?

Thanks People for Education for posting the ministries request for responce on draft Parent Engagement Policy. What I am upset over is why the PIC chairs weren't sent this info and invited to respond…

Marbat, I have a different take. Schools council's exist, ie. in business terms are their own entity. We have bylaws, voting structure etc. If we fundraise we direct the funds- the principal cannot "out vote us". To some of your points. School autho…

Actually - all school councils are supposed to include both (at least) one teaching and one non-teaching staff member (and a student rep at the seconday level, and at the discretion of the Principal at the elementary level). The only person who does…

I am employed in a couple of the schools, including where my kids go to school and where I am on council. That, I guess, is where the conflict of interest arises. I cannot see what kind of conflict of interest would prevent me from voting on spendin…

Full of good sense and practicality!! Thank you for expressing so succinctly what I was thinking . I really think most parents are doing what they want/can and most know about the existence of their school councils, less so probably are aware of the…

Hi again Carolyn, Are you employed at the school where you are also a parent, or elsewhere in the board? The voting rights would be different depending on that.

OK PLEASE add "fundraising" to my initial comments - as in: If a school council is investing more than 10% of its time, energy, volunteers on fundraising - then they are NOT properly focused. School Councils are not supposed to fundraise - they are…

WOW! Kudos to Gord for starting this discussion - it has gone in many different directions - but all are valuable. The "vision": ideally PICS would operate similarly to School Councils operating "properly" under their real mandate, which is advisor…

Hi Sheila, Thanks for acknowledging my post. I hear what you are saying about commmunication between PIC's and school councils and how non-effective it ultimately can be if council members are too busy fundraising, or time is not given to address b…

Nice to see your participation and thoughts here, Carolyn! Your perspective and questions are good, and I recognize that you are new to this “front” in Ontario. Good to hear your questions too, Kevin. And thanks, Jacqui. I guess I am trying to sort…

Hi Jacqui, Carolyn, Mike, and everyone else. Thanks so much for your input and comments. I value all the the various interests that we all have in our children's education. As parents, we all strive to afford a better life for our children then the…

Mike, I have to say that you expressed many of my concerns and questions about the role and responsibilities of school council. I hear you and your frustration about the topics of discussion, but if council doesn't discuss the mundane, day to day, w…

Thank you Mike for adding a balanced and practical voice to the discsussion of just what constitutes "involvement". How much do parents really want to do and what is realistic to expect from the front-lines when there is so much else parents need to…

Thanks, Jacqui, for explaining the role of PIC at the Board level. I am a PIC member (part of Gord's committee actually) and also on school council at my children's school. That being said, I have to admit that I am not as well-versed in the roles/r…

Hi Kevin, I know Gord is away this week, but I can help answer some of your questions, and hopefully he can jump in where I leave holes: 1) PIC mandates will vary from board to board - the ministry recommended the establishment of PICs, but has no…

Hi Gord, Since you are part of a PIC that seems to be working well with their Board and Parent Councils, maybe you can clear my head. 1. What is the mandate of a PIC and where can I find this on the web? 2. Who elects members of the PIC? 3. Are PIC…

I would like to encourage individuals/groups to submit comments/questions in addition to just completing the rating scales in the online survey. I hope people aren't too overwhelmed reading the whole document, but it does help inform about history a…
