Hi Kevin, This is a great question, and I look forward to hearing what other people have to say. Our research seems to indicate that it varies from school to school and board to board as to how fundraised money is handled. Since 2005, all fundrais...

I have been with People for Education for over 10 years now, and I am very excited about our growing online community. For the past two years, I have been the coordinator for our Parent Inclusion Initiative, and this is another great way for parents to connect and share their ideas and resources! I am always happy to meet more people who care about public education.

I have two sons, one in grade 7 and one in grade 10, and I am the school council chair at Monarch Park Collegiate - it seems I just don't know when to quit! :-)

I love working with parents from all across the province and from a wide variety of backgrounds, and I am looking forward to connecting to even more of you through this community!

Hi Jacqui, thanks. I have been a parent-activist for the past couple of years, school council parent member, volunteer, etc.. My interest with joining was piqued when I saw the blog on 'the purpose of education". I don't think that this question has received enough attention in our society. I have been to People for Education website before to collect information on school closures. I found the information posted helpful. I look forward to participating in some discussions and contributing what I can.

Hi Jacqui,
Thanks for connecting with me. Ethel is a small community about 45 miles west of Kitchener, in the Listowel-Wingham area. We have a wonderful Central School there, called Grey Central, located on 22.5 acres of land with a hardwood bush and a pine woods on the property, a river skirting the edge of the property with an amphitheatre along the river bank and an Environmental Learning Grounds on the school property. The Learning Grounds was established in the early 1990's with the help of the Ministry of Natural Resources, a Conservation Authority and grants from various sources. Children, and parents also were very actively involved in the developement of the Learning Grounds. As a teacher there for many years, I witnessed first hand the benefits of having such as resource at one's fingertips. Unfortunately Grey Central is up for Review this year and the Board recommendation is that the school be closed and our children transported 10 miles away to a much larger school. We are just shy of 80% capacity and just under 200 pupils. This explains my interest in your group. I have already learned much by just surfing around on you web site. Our school supporters are looking for ways to convince our Board that this valuable resource should not be abandoned.

Hi Jacqui, thanks for your message. At this present time I am attempting to pull together a last minute application for the Reaching Out Grant for the school my daughter attends. We are interested in doing a family math night and I am curious as to who else connected to People for Education has done Math/Literacy/Science nights at their school and how they went about it? Did they bring in outside facilitators ( WHO, I am in Toronto) or facilitate it themselves and use certain resources?

Advice is much appreciated! Many thanks! Hollis

Thank you very much and wonderful web site!

I am a single mother with 2 children in grade 6 and 3 , I've been involve/d with their school as much as I could/can while I am trying to manage our disability and every day life.

It's is very difficult for me to write about myself on the www although in person that is not true :-o but I can say that It's a lonely world while I was searching on the Internet as well as in my neighborhood then I found you :-) It's wonderful to see there are people next to you that are passionate about their life and while they are trying to find a way helping others to grow.

Best regards,

Thank you for the warm welcome Jacqui. My interests here are mulitple; first I am a parent of three, two of which required individual education plans for accommodations. WIth hard work and dedication and many obstacles all three have moved from the publicaly funded school system onto post secondary education. My second interest is that I represent Educational Assistants working with students who need support during their educational career. As Educational Asssiatnts we advocate for the students we support. I have always supported "People for Education", your work, your advocacy on behalf of publically funded education and the information which you provide here on your site.

Hi Jacqui! Thanks for the welcome. I have been involved with School Councils for about 4 years now and though I enjoy it I really feel I need something more. I am considering running for School Board Trustee in my region (Waterloo Region) and know that P4E have some great research and resources that will help me build my platform. I have read a lot of the work the organization has been doing over the years and appreciate the bigger perspective. Thanks again!

Nancy

Not so long ago I chanced upon a tv interview with Sarah Vowell. She was talking about her new book The Wordy Shipmates and she was funny and intriguing enough that I picked up the book. Not only has she written a number of books, she is also the voice of Violet in the animated film The Incredibles and contributes regularly to the This American Life on Chicago Public Radio
Although I was reading for amusement, information and stories, once again I bumped into education!
The Wordy Shipmates is about the Puritans in the 17 century and Sarah Vowell's childhood in the 20th century and life now in the 21st. The book is a delightful flow of ideas and customs that weave through the narrative of American life. Education was there at the beginning
