Everyone is welcome: this group begins at our conference on Saturday. It's a support group for people who want to learn more about using technology to communicate. How to do stuff here, or to start an e-news listserv, or group & more!

There are always ways to post anonymously. Here, I think it is important to believe in what I am posting, so I am willing to put my full name behind it. I added my picture, because I am really putting myself into this. That is my choice. My son en...

This is a very interesting discussion. I have always been an extrovert, and as such have never really considered NOT using my real name whenever I represent myself. Even on the odd occasions when I stick my foot in my mouth! I have been part of d...

A bunch of us from the online community are planning to "meet-up" at the conference at York University on Saturday Nov. 7th. We can chat at lunch! So let us know if you are coming... we want to meet you!

Thank you for your comment. It's a concern if there is that kind of fear out there. I'm not sure how to even talk about it. Fear is very difficult. However I don't think there is any suggestion about forcing people to use their real names. Rather...

Many teachers won't use their real names for fear of retribution from their boards and/or their unions. (I know from experience) Many parents won't use real names for fear of how they or their kids will be treated. You won't get real answers from ...

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?

I am the mother of two children. I used to garden, now I prefer to sit and knit rather than dig. I used to run; now I do yoga. Perhaps these changes in my recreational life tell you that my children are now young adults.
I live in a big city (Toronto) that I was told was cold and unfriendly. I have not found this to be true. But it is true that when my children started kindergarten at the local elementary school, I started to connect with my neighbourhood. It was through the school community that I really met my neighbours and it is through the school that my children developed their friendships. I have been involved one way or the other at People for Education for many years and currently provide administrative support in the office.
I’ve very interested in Schools at the Centre and in the development of Web 2.0 as a means of building relationships, sharing experiences and developing strategies for a strong public school system.

Not so long ago I chanced upon an interview with Sarah Vowell. Sarah is funny. smart and engaging! She was talking about her new book The Wordy Shipmates and she was so intriguing that I picked up the book. Not only has she written a number of books, she is also the voice of Violet in the animated film The IncrediblesContinue

Hi Jan,

Yes, Kingsville is at the most southern end of Ontario. A quaint little town on the shore of Lake Erie. I love it. I heard about this website through our trustee. It is a very interesting resource. Thanks to your team for creating and maintaining it. Working together, we can make a difference.

Not so long ago I chanced upon a tv interview with Sarah Vowell. She was talking about her new book The Wordy Shipmates and she was funny and intriguing enough that I picked up the book. Not only has she written a number of books, she is also the voice of Violet in the animated film The Incredibles and contributes regularly to the This American Life on Chicago Public Radio
Although I was reading for amusement, information and stories, once again I bumped into education!
The Wordy Shipmates is about the Puritans in the 17 century and Sarah Vowell's childhood in the 20th century and life now in the 21st. The book is a delightful flow of ideas and customs that weave through the narrative of American life. Education was there at the beginning

I apologize. I am eager to read other people's contributions but Sheila's question really got me thinking and I wanted to share my thoughts. I think that Sam’s blog – “the Purpose of Education – Revised” is a valuable contribution to this discuss...

I really like what you have shared here, Anthony. I am going to mull this over some more, and as you have said/suggested, our education system is focused on producing workers. So for now, I would like to put the question "out there", why might the...
