Report Calls Online Threats to Children Overblown

There is an article about a report, in today's New York Times which says that "the problem of sexual solicitation of children online ... is not a significant problem." but goes on to say that "the problem of bullying among children, both online and offline, poses a far more serious challenge than the sexual solicitation of minors by adults".

One expert is quoted as saying “Social networks are very much like real-world communities that are comprised mostly of good people who are there for… Continue

The other side of ICT: 'collective intelligence'; your digital trail and privacy

Hi John: Nothing has been resolved. The OCT continues to break their own policies and continues to fail to protect kids and the profession. On June 17 2008 a convicted sex offender admitted to having had sex five times with kids during a dicipline hearing where he was called as a witness. He admitted to having sex five times with kids but also admitted that he claimed only one "legal" issue during his closed door reinstatement hearing. Two College Lawyers were present and three members of the College Council were there too. The College continues to fail to protect children from this person who has done so much wrong to the profession and destroyed young kids. Reading what happened to the Irish Residential School in the news today, breaks my heart. ....All the best.... Jim

Hey John!

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond! For me the policy degree isn't so much about working in the policy field (my eventual aspirations lie in the practice of intellectual property law) but more about getting an understanding, both theoretical and practical, of how what we are told is 'the law' is developed and implemented. It's a fascinating preamble to a law degree, and one which I think will give me a rather unique perspective on the practice.

And indeed, leaning leftwards is the way I like to be!

More about the programme: A Masters of Public Policy at U of T equips students with the theoretical and practical knowledge to tackle policy issues. For example the first-year core curriculum includes quantitiative methods (statistics), micro/macro economics and courses focused on different aspects of understanding the policy-making process, like implementation and the social context of policy-making.
