Did you know 4.0

The need to collaborate and think out of the box is solidified when you listen to how we need to respond to a classroom with out walls. I continue to find the Shift Happens series a learning curve. Karl Fisch and Scott McLeod have released their latest version.

The dilemma for school boards is how to keep up with the ever increasing cost of technology.… Continue

Do you use the Internet to connect with your child's classroom.

I think that everyone here has already noticed my bias with all things related to technology. Sometimes it is easy to get too close to a subject

It is for that very reason I ask this question. In the day to day happenings in your life, do you use the Internet to connect with your child's classroom? If not, what could be done to help get you connected? OR do you want to use the Internet to connect?

Hi Lorna,

Thank you for your interest in the OCASC website.

OCASC is slowly enbracing the technology available to them - as you know it's more about teaching the people who use your resources how to use and trust them then anything else.

Currently OCASC has it's regular e-newsletter, OCASC News, going out to our community 2-3 times a month with updates, important news, links and meeting reminders.

The website has been a large and on going project over the past 3 years. We've changed formats and ISPs several times in the attempt but now I think we're on track with a blog. This month we've re-introduced our discussion boards, added an interactive online calendar for School Board, Council and general education events in the city & province.

As we get the new OCASC Board Committee Reps up to speed we will once again be posting regular reports from them, from the parent point of view, of what's happening during these all important School Board Meetings. ( In case you didn't know - OCASC has the priviledge of having a non-voting representative at the table at all OCDSB committees).

The website will hopefully continue to grow in it's use and exposure and we're hoping that it becomes "THE" educational resource for parents in Ottawa.

Hi Lorna;

This format is new for me, but do believe that we are 'friends' now on this site.
My concerns, however, about public education have consume much of my time and energies of late.
Glad to see that I am not an island, when it comes to my concern/interest in public education.

Have a great day!

Thanks, Lorna. I'm off work for a few weeks with a broken ankle - apparently I did quite a job on it. I'm keeping in touch via e-mail and through the marvels of technology. Good luck with this initiative.

Lorna, is there a chat function on this site. For example right now there are three of us on line. Can we chat in real time? You understand this better than I do.

This time the book is a podcast. When you’re tired or busy with another task, well the podcast can be just the thing. Recently I heard Learning, Doing, Being: A New Science of Education. If you were intrigued by Alanna Mitchell’s recent Atkinson Series: Brainstorm about the developments of brain science and the impact on education, then this podcast may interest you.

From Speaking of Faith produced by American Public Media, host Krista Tippett talks with writers, artists, scientists, thinkers and theologians about ” belief, meaning, ethics and ideas” . Last week she interviewed neuroscientist (and dancer) Adele Diamond who now teaches at UBC .
She talks about Executive Functions. It turns out that play and especially dramatic play is key to the development of self –regulation.
“Her work is scientifically illustrating the educational power of things like play, sports, music, memorization and reflection” The more parts of an individual that get involved, the more the brain changes. The research is “turning modernity on its head”
Here is a short slide show clip....
