Council Elections

Our school council did not advertise nor give 14 days written notice to each family with a pupil in the school this year (nor last). They seem to re-elect themselves via "accalimation" each year, b...

Brilliant idea Anthony! What a great way for "People For Education" to reach out and engage the greater whole and its inherent diversity while including the students who represent the future, and giving everyone a voice in a considered and conside...

Critical judgment disappears altogether, for in no way can there ever be collective critical judgment....The individual can no longer judge for himself because he inescapably relates his thoughts to the entire complex of values and prejudices esta...

In order to truly measure something, there needs to be a concrete structure and a definitive description; therefore in order to answer the above question, we would need to define what is meant by success? and, what is considered "successful"?

I concur. What a good idea to engage the media. In our area, Special Education planning committees (SEAC) are supposed to "engage" and consult via "invitation to respond" to "all parents receiving special ed services" but none of the special ed pa...

Maybe P4E could do a poll (parents, teachers, councils)? Maybe the media would provide some coverage regarding the poll? Maybe the public could be aroused that way to write to their MPP's? Have there been any publicized debates (sorry if this is r...

What about putting it to a vote? If EQAO costs as many millions as this website suggests (is there some way to determine exactly how much?) why not do what the democratic process would suggest and have the politicians/Ministry open up the decision...

Everything said above is true, but I would like to clarify one point. Typically a school council will have members and executive. For 99% of the time any parent can be a member of school council giving them voting privileges with no need to be ele...

This time the book is a podcast. When you’re tired or busy with another task, well the podcast can be just the thing. Recently I heard Learning, Doing, Being: A New Science of Education. If you were intrigued by Alanna Mitchell’s recent Atkinson Series: Brainstorm about the developments of brain science and the impact on education, then this podcast may interest you.

From Speaking of Faith produced by American Public Media, host Krista Tippett talks with writers, artists, scientists, thinkers and theologians about ” belief, meaning, ethics and ideas” . Last week she interviewed neuroscientist (and dancer) Adele Diamond who now teaches at UBC .
She talks about Executive Functions. It turns out that play and especially dramatic play is key to the development of self –regulation.
“Her work is scientifically illustrating the educational power of things like play, sports, music, memorization and reflection” The more parts of an individual that get involved, the more the brain changes. The research is “turning modernity on its head”
Here is a short slide show clip....
