What a great way to build community! Two years ago, Coleman Lemieux et compagnie, one of Canada's foremost modern dance companies, relocated from Montreal to Toronto's Regent Park neighbourhood. Since then, they have been actively involved in the revitalization of their community. On July 25, they presented "Breaking Ground", a performance that took place in the middle of the construction site in the heart of Regent Park. They involved a wide diversity of community members, including traditional Aboriginal drummers from the Council Fire Native Cultural Centre, Heather Ogden from the National Ballet, and even the builders and construction workers! This clip shows the amazing "machine choreography" that was part of the show. Believe it or not, there are dancers hidden under the piles of burlap! It poured with rain, as you can see in the clip, but the audience was held rapt throughout the performance, and didn't care about getting soaked. It was an awe-inspiring performance, and an amazing example of how people from incredibly different backgrounds can come together to make something beautiful and build community!
